As significant as skirt length may be (see Part 1), when it comes to making the right style statement, fabric is important, too. The right fabric can make the difference between an office-appropriate skirt and a great date look, a playful weekend outing and a formal evening event. Cut also plays a role, especially when you consider the right top and accessories to pair with your skirt. But don’t worry: you don’t have to figure it out all on your own.
Leather Skirts
Leather skirts have a lot to offer: they’re hard working yet edgy and make a bold style statement with a variety of tops. If attitude is everything, then leather skirts have everything! Modern and versatile, leather skirts are often in the mini length, though midi and maxi leather skirts do exist. Boasting warmth, leather skirts are popular options in the fall and winter months. You can keep the look simple and sleek by pairing your skirt with a simple, dark-colored button-down shirt or a tucked-in tank beneath a blazer. Alternatively, you could choose a flouncy floral or lace blouse for a fashionable yet feminine look.
Denim Skirts
Making a comeback with other fashion trends from the 1990s, denim skirts aren’t difficult to find. Available in mini and midi lengths and in both A-line and pencil styles, denim skirts can give a casual outfit a trendy edge. Especially great for spring and summer months, our favorite is a distressed denim paired with an oversized leather jacket.
Plaid Skirts
Another throwback to the 90s, skirts in tartan and plaid are definitely chic. Perhaps these skirts found in the streets of fashion capitals of the world have you thinking grunge; but that’s not exactly the look we’re after. For fall, you can’t go wrong with plaid midi skirt in dark colors, paired with a lighter colored, long cardi and those ankle boots.
Sequin Skirts
For a more glamorous look, sequins are the way to go! Definitely more appropriate for an evening out than for a casual or professional look, a sequin skirt offers an attention-getting sparkle that will get you noticed. To offset the shine, you’ll want to pair this skirt with a simple, casual top such as a solid-colored sweater or tee.
Tulle Skirts
Flirty and feminine, tulle skirts add a touch of whimsy to any outfit. Definitely more popular with the younger set, tulle skirts can offer the perfect touch for formal events such as school dances and wedding receptions. When paired with a simple, cropped black tee or hoodie and sling-back heels, a tulle skirt creates a casual yet edgy effect. Word on the street is that you’d be looking pretty sassy in a tulle skirt.
From leather to tulle and denim to sequins, the kind of fabric definitely helps determine the style statement that you’ll make. In addition to skirt length and fabric type, skirts can be classified by their silhouettes (see Part 3). And some are better for some seasons than others. But that’s the topic of another style guide post.
