Hardwood Profile: Cherry Lumber

August 6, 2012 By Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

Cherry lumber is native to America’s Appalachian Mountains. Prunus Serotina (Cherry) is prevalent in the Ohio River Valley and Pennsylvania and is a hardwood with consistent color and grades. J. Gibson McIlvain, one of the nation’s leading lumber wholesalers, proudly offers this hardwood lumber as part of their wholesale inventory.

Appearance

Warm, rich color is the mark of Cherry lumber. This exquisite tree grows 100-feet tall with trunk diameter of 4-5 feet. The lumber is known as Cherry, Black Cherry, Rum Cherry, and Mountain Black Cherry, but regardless of the name, quality always accompanies this wood.

Two distinct colors appear in Cherry from the nonliving heartwood to the bulk of the tree (the sapwood). Cherry heartwood is the signature reddish brown that darkens over time into a rich auburn. Combining the satiny white sapwood with Cherry heartwood is a great way to create gorgeous and striking contrast, whereas separate use of sapwood and heartwood delivers a beautiful and consistent look. Smooth texture and exceptional workability have made this lumber a favorite despite small, naturally occurring pitch and gum pockets.

Application

Projects using Cherry lumber are varied due to its inherent beauty, workability, and strength. Cherry accepts screws, glue and other joinery with little trouble, and sanding and cutting are both a breeze. The advantages of this wonderful wood continue into staining and finishing. The natural beauty and qualities call for very little extra color or showcasing, making Cherry a wonderful choice for indoor millwork and furniture. The application list continues with musical instruments and luxury boat interiors, among others.
