Flash Drive Vs. External Hard Drive

April 4, 2012 By Sozo Staff 1 Comment

In today’s market, choosing a device to transfer and save computer files can be difficult. In this digital age, though, it’s important to protect all photographs, videos, documents, certificates, and communications. With a multitude of options, it is important to do your research and know your options. Two popular storage devices are USB flash drives and portable external hard drives. While both devices can be personally customized by a company like CFgear, there are many differences between the two storage devices.

USB Drives

A USB drive (also known as a flash drive or a thumb drive) is a data storage device that uses flash memory and a Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface. They are removable, rewritable, and easy to carry, as a flash drive can typically fit in your pocket or on a key ring. USB drives are durable and reliable since they have no moving parts (because the more moving parts, the greater the likelihood that one of them will malfunction).

They also support fast data transfers through a simple connection with your computer. USB drives can store photographs, videos, documents, or any type of communication. They are a reliable resource to transfer data from computer to computer.

Finally, flash drives tend to be very inexpensive.

External Hard Drives

External hard drives can be a valuable resource for backing up great amounts of data. They have the capacity to back up a main internal hard drive or even an entire operating system, as they are meant to store large files and large amounts of information.

External hard drives are essentially the same hardware that is installed in your laptop or desktop computer, and they are connected through a Firewire data cable or USB cable. Many external hard drives offer built-in encryption that allows sensitive data to be locked away from curious eyes.

Although significantly more costly than USB flash drives, external hard drives can also store much more data, and with current trends and demands, they continue to drop in price.

Finally, while external hard drives can be portable and easy to transport, they are much more prone to damage than flash drives. It is important to keep external hard drives safe and treat them with great care, as they can be rather fragile.

Customize your device

Customized USB drives and external hard drives from a company like CFgear have multiple uses. They can be customized for use as gifts for summer camps, conferences, or clubs. With current technology, flash drives can even be customized in shape, making 3D flash drives an affordable way to make a huge impression. Events such as plays, concerts, or graduation ceremonies can be preloaded onto a customized drive for participants or audience members to keep their memories.

Furthermore, selling the preloaded drives can be an excellent fundraiser for a school or organization.  Customized drives are also an ideal keepsake for the alumni of a school, and they make great advertising and business marketing guides. Instead of a typical pen or pin, a drive can be a great way for others to remember your business or organization.

Both external hard drives and USB flash drives can be customized to include a logo or graphic of the event on the drive. The color or graphic of the drive can be designed to promote the event or organization.

When purchasing a new storage device, remember to keep options open. Do the research to determine what type works best for you. And finally, if your situation warrants it, remember that custom flash drive companies like CFgear.com are available to help you go the extra mile and have your new portable device customized.

most people can get away with having a few larger flash drives i think. external hard drives are for people with extreme amounts of data, not the average person.
