Changing Lumber Prices

August 6, 2012 By Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

The process of lumber pricing is a tricky subject for a layman because lumber pricing guidelines are surprisingly intricate and highly dependent on a varied number of factors. A wholesale exotic and domestic lumber supplier like J. Gibson McIlvain has to incorporate countless fees into any individual order. From importation fees to overhead transportation cost, each order price will be unique.

Choosing an Order

When a customer comes into J. Gibson McIlvain with a specific order in mind, the staff will do their best to fill it precisely. Depending on the current inventory, they may be able to match everything needed specifically, or they may have to do some cutting and shaping. Every species of wood has a different supply and demand factor, and if inventory is low on a certain wood, the price will increase as a result of the increased labor necessary to fill the order. An order for high inventory wood will likely mean a lower price, but if the order needs custom millwork, the price will go up again. These are just a few examples of the factors that can impact order price.

Seasonal Shifts

The same order of wood will cost something different every week of the year because of the shifting nature of a supplier’s inventory. Imported exotic lumber comes from several countries, and a lumberyard’s inventory will naturally be higher at certain times of year. For example, purchasing Ipe lumber in June means better pricing because a supplier must stock up on this wood in early spring. The governmental and environmental controls on Ipe means J. Gibson McIlvain must buy an entire year’s stock at one time. This large inventory means McIlvain can assemble an order quickly with the cheapest product available. As this inventory starts to dwindle, however, prices will obviously rise.

J. Gibson McIlvain offers a wide variety of lumber, with many alternatives to the more expensive popular woods. Their efficient pricing system may fluctuate, but they never inflate the price of an order unnecessarily. For over 200 years, McIlvain Company has been a trusted name in the lumber industry, and no one is better equipped to help you finish your next lumber-related project.
